Feeling Stuck or Unsure How to Switch Careers? Start With Your Transferable Skills

At some point in our lives, most of us face a career crossroads.

A few years ago, I found myself in that exact space, uncertain whether I wanted to continue down the same professional path or pivot into something new. The idea of change was excitingโ€ฆ but also overwhelming. I thought that switching careers meant starting over completely.

I was wrong.

What I came to learn, and now share with every candidate I work with, is this: Youโ€™re not starting from scratch. Youโ€™re starting from experience.

What Are Transferable Skills?
Transferable skills are the talents, traits, and abilities you’ve developed over time, through work, life, or education, that are relevant across roles, industries, and even careers.

Think:

Communication (written and verbal)
Team leadership
Problem-solving
Customer service
Project or time management
Tech proficiency
Adaptability and resilience

To pivot in your career, you donโ€™t need to change who you are, you just need to reframe what you already have.

How I Identified My Own Transferable Skills
When I began this journey, I asked myself three key questions:

What do people always come to me for? Support? Problem-solving? Strategy? Mentorship? These are often clues to your core strengths.
What have I consistently done well, regardless of the job title? I realized that communication, people development, and leadership were the golden threads in every role Iโ€™d held.
What feedback have I received from colleagues, clients, or leaders? I started gathering a clearer picture of how others experienced my value, which helped me believe in it myself.

The more I explored, the more confident I became in articulating my strengths, not just in a CV, but in interviews and conversations.

How You Can Leverage Yours
If you’re considering a career shift or simply want to reposition yourself for new opportunities, start here:

Audit your experience. Look beyond job titles and list the actual tasks, challenges, and wins you’ve had. What skills made those successes possible?
Translate your skills into the language of your desired industry. For example, if you โ€œhandled stock,โ€ thatโ€™s logistics, organisation, and forecasting, all highly valuable in multiple sectors.
Update your CV and LinkedIn profile to reflect these broader capabilities. Itโ€™s not about what you were, itโ€™s about what you can do.

Final Thoughts
Your experience is more valuable than you think. The key is learning to see it from a wider lens.

Whether you’re feeling stuck, thinking about a change, or just unsure how to position yourself, know this: You have more to offer than your current job title suggests.

And you donโ€™t have to figure it out alone.
